Review: End GPs Giving Long-Term Sick Notes

Post by Martyn20 on Sun Nov 20, 2011 12:49 am

Doctors should no longer be able to issue sick notes for workers who are on long-term leave from their jobs, a new review says.
A new independent assessment service would take over the role instead - a move it is claimed could save hundreds of millions of pounds and see more people return to work.
The government review recommends family GPs still certify up to four weeks of absence but says employers should be able to refer those off sick for longer than this to an independent panel of doctors.

Do they not trust GP's to do the right thing, or do they not feel GP's who know their patients best will not do the right thing.
Is this another way to stop the state supporting those in need, reducing the numbers of those on benefits clearly means they will make different decisions to those on this 'panel'
